Two Heart-Warming Scenes, New York

I have not smoked a cigarette in two weeks and one day. I feel absolutely great and resolved. But it will always be heart warming to see cigarettes and a paper coffee cup.

I am often guilty of leaning on a hot flash of pop culture as if it were a masterwork, as though some little juicy piece is an iconic representation of our time. In this way, a large portion of my childhood was wrapped up in a little film called "The Pirate Movie." Freely can attest to my college era appreciation of Matchbox 20 and other bands who produce astoundingly average pop tunes.

But these are the milestones that matter to me, art that arrives angelically when I am vulnerable, when no one is there to pressure me in to sophistication.

In the film Reality Bites, Ethan Hawke and Winona rider escape from some little crisis to walk around with paper cups of coffee and smokes.
"See Lainy, this is all we need. A couple of smokes, a cup of coffee, and a little bit of conversation. You and me and five bucks."

Classic, Joel. I myself find certain solace in unfinished projects involving blue painter's tape.
