The Best Surf Forecast. Ever.

(At least thats what I hope it is because I just called it that.)

Jack has been working on a surf forecasting service for a couple years. He takes all the known weather variables that one can easily find in your basic marine forecasts, the ones we have been using for a long, long time to try and predict when there will be swell, and then he puts that into some kind of equation he thought up, one that takes into account all sorts of personal experience and other heretofore unculled data, and the little Jack machine rumbles and wheezes and spits out an eerily accurate surf-specific swell forecast. It is the sort of process that no one had previously taken the time to think up, much less manufacture.
Right now he is only focusing on California. Apparently the process of data mining and algorithm formulation is pretty time consuming. I am going to start pestering him for a New York area version pretty soon. He ought to have enough data for that, I would think.
Anyhow, Jack is a pretty scientific guy. The relative designy-ness of his site belies a certain pragmatic, no-frills approach that is right in step with his whole mojo. I have had only a couple opportunities to test out his theories on surf forecasting and they were spot on, to the beach, matching the conditions perfectly.
If you are in California, and you want to know where to surf, check out his Spitcast. Then let him know how it turned out. Of the two of you, I'd venture that you'll be the more surprised.

Jack is also the kind of friend who put a surf report for Denver on his site so I wouldn't feel so isolated and out of touch. I think it's still hidden on there somewhere, and is always 100% accurate.

totally gnar gnar. Congrats to Jack on his impending nuptuals.

I prefer the James Zender school of surf post-casting. No matter the actual conditions, it was really gnarly and most likely triple overhead.

don't forget to look for "cock-goat-gurney". the site's crowning achievement.
