Stella

I pass by kids stores and my peculiar demons whisper to me that some failed fashionista sap has finally figured out his/her special niche: "Oh! I'll open a kid store!" And there they are, self-satisfied, opening a surely damned kid's clothing store with maddeningly petite mannequins in the window, wearing little insipidly cute striped jumpers. These people believe they have a certain flare for fashion and an eye for the smartly nuanced cliche masquerading in practicality. When I first set eyes on Spacecraft, Stella's kid craft store, those lilliputian knowitalls between my drums started their faint scoffing. But Spacecraft, to their dismay, is different. As much as it is the showcase for a discerning eye, as most shops on Bedford now are, it is a little community fund of knowledge and relaxation, the big table in the back beckoning children and adults alike to build and paint a little skateboard or a t-shirt or any number of others things I haven't built there yet. Spacecraft also hosts hand-me-down fests where parents can bring their kids old clothes to swap with other vicariously sartorial parents. Basically, it is a real place doing real things.
