Joel, 1999

Joel was a hippie. I think he grew up in the Philippines as a missionary kid. I met his father and his little brother once and they looked like serious missionary hippies. Joel is probably still a hippie. That sort of thing is hard to shake. He used to play music that sounded like the music in the animated version of The Hobbit, a sound that has since been repackaged along the line and labeled "Indie Folk."
It is generally genuinely pleasant music, all soft guitar strings and warbled voices. I either gave or sold my old bicycle to Joel when I left Santa Barbara after he broke my ukulele and replaced it with a backwards strung upside down left handed guitar. Thats the kind of thing Joel would do. He is pretty special, no doubt.
