Curran's father may not vote Republican because the Sarah Palin VP choice insults his intelligence. I wonder how many other Republicans feel the same way?
Now I wonder how many of them are bigots and are really struggling between a rock and a hard place with this one.
Just joking.
I wasn't really wondering that.

In no way am I trying to intimate that Curran's father is a bigot. He is a particularly smart sounding Republican.

Curran's father believes that bad people need to be removed from power by force. This is a bit Machiavellian but removing bad people from power is, ultimately, necessary.

The current question is...Will Obama be be softer on international bad guys then McCain?

My father thinks Obama will be softer. I do not think there is any way to predict and I think the reason my father has come to abovementioned conclusion is based on the biased media he occasionally watches. Obama's predicted softness with international bad guys is a GOP talking point.

Due to my ongoing talks with my father he is softening his stance on Obama potentially being soft on bad guys.

Final comment.
Could anyone have predicted whether Harry Truman would drop the bomb on Hiroshima following Pearl Harbor based on what was known about Harry Truman during his election campaign?

Or: ask the same question about JFK and the Cuban crisis?

Answer: No fucking way dude. No fucking way.

This is one of my main problems with the "soft" question.
It hits at just that Machiavellian bit you sounded out first.
I have problem with Republicans who maintain that the only real "hard" way to deal with the baddies is through overwhelming, massive force.
I laugh at this.
It shows a fundamental lack of creativity in enthusiasm for justice and retribution.

Machiavelli would not have espoused blunt force. He would have espoused the fine scalpel. That is exactly what I think Obama will bring.

And what do you think would be more painful?

Ugh, did I just say "baddies" and then did I follow that up with "which do you think would be more painful?"?

Man, I am going to some deep, dark places here.

so - first off, this 'hard on baddy' mentality i am espousing is a major undercurrent thought in many of the McCain supporters brains (my father), and possibly in the undecided people's brains -
(not mine, what's good enough for colin powell is good enough for me)

that said, i think this discussion exists on 2 levels,

1. Reality - what is the best way to handle baddy in the real world when something arises - in that case, i agree with 'thinking outside of the box' and in light of the Iraq failure, i think the next incident will be much more creative

2. Perception - how can Obama sway people's (undecided) perception for the time being and get elected - fortunately the scalpel metaphor is tight and it looks like he is in good shape on that front

so... and then to return to my original thought - all of this is just 'jawing' in that noone knows how anyone else will react to baddies until the situation arises - because everything is conditional - all you can do it put massive trust in one person to 'do the right thing' and we seem to be doing that with Obama, and 'god-willing' he takes office, i think that is something to be proud of, as a country. (assuming he doesn't fuck up)

then we're back in the dog house.

ha!
yep.
thats about right.
it is an ability to foresee the process someone takes to come to a decision after the situation arises that is so obviously important.

Do you want a leader "shooting from the hip" or "calling it from the gut" on such important matters?

Do you want a leader who will put things into historical and political context and figure out the best, most efficient means to the end?

Unfortunately those two processes seem to be at odds in our government today.

McCain basically got bullied into picking Sarah Palin as his VP. What else will he get bullied into? Or conversely, what else will he take irrational stands on as president simply because he was bullied on the campaign?

He seems just like the sort of crumbum to loose his shit at the wrong time.
