Ian Surfing The 60's Plank

Ian had this incredibly heavy and flat 60's plank with one of those wide glassed-in keels. Every so often it would rain so much in Santa Barbara that the sand bars around the pier right in the middle of town would be perfect. It was such an oddity that no one bothered to check it and would spend their time combing the coast north and south. Well, maybe they didn't surf there because all the flooding caused tons of bacterial runoff from the sewers about 50 yards away. We never got sick though and the surf was super fun, especially on that big plank.

i like it. these pictures sort of make me sad and nostalgic all at once. not so much ian, but the water and the surf.

Agreed. Nice shot.

I think the somewhat unsaturated color, the yellowish light, and the faded look of the photo create that sense of nostalgia and loss that benji is talking about. The image is very vibrant and active, but it feels irrevocably lost and in the past. The glittering of the sun on the water creates this feeling especially powerfully. The feeling is heightened because the viewer knows that these shots are from long ago, from a summer spent with an old friend; these scenes are captured on film, but will never return in life.
